Trogon Lodge

A very relaxed stay with quality food and accommodation.

Pros: The setting in the valley and beautiful gardens. Very friendly and attentive staff, especially Sebastian.

Beautiful gardens

Pros: The whole site is beautifully kept and nice to walk around. The rooms are quiet and comfortable and the bar is really nice and cosy.

Nice, but left with a bitter taste in my mouth

Pros: The location and the way the lodgings are built is very nice. It was very clean and well maintained. The area in general is unspoilt and good for exploring on foot.

Cons: The restaurant is very expensive for what it is (and cold). Temperatures drop to 5C or so overnight and you'll likely need your coat on. Also, one of the staff (the head waiter) was exceptionally rude one evening because I dared to arrive ahead of my allotted time. The restaurant was pretty empty and is also one of the only places you can get WiFi, along with the bar (which was completely full - hence why I went to the restaurant early). I went elsewhere for dinner and had a very nice meal, which was much more reasonably priced - and experienced far better customer service. The other staff in the restaurant (particularly Sebastian) were excellent though - he was obviously very embarrassed about what happened and went above and beyond to try to help the following day. Thank you to him!

Beautiful location and lodges.

Pros: Beautiful setting and very comfortable lodges with nice touches such as hot water bottles. Lovely gardens and nice trails. Comfortable bar and deck with further seating and lounging areas around the gardens. Great tours for birders. The road down is \

Cons: The restaurant is good and has paid attention to all the aspects of a good restaurant, however, there could be some adjustment to some of the dishes to make them more refined and on par with the prices. However, the breakfast as part of the room deal was good.

Perfect stop off

Pros: Trogon Lodge was a perfect stopping place for us as we were driving from Corcovado to Tortuguero, it was not too far off the main road so didn’t add too many extra miles to our journey. There are a couple of little walks you can do ( which we did as limited on time ) or there are lots of arranged guided tours if you are staying for longer. The bar was lovely but quite busy as it’s one of the only places you could connect to WiFi so everyone was in there. The other place is the restaurant or reception. Breakfast was included and it was very nice. More of a buffet style being that it was more of a hotel. We also had dinner at the restaurant, it was delicious but expensive. The cabin itself was very cute, a little dark but we weren’t inside much so it wasn’t too bad. It was also very cold. Being so high up it was expected to be cold but there was only a small heater in the room. Thankfully there was plenty of blankets for the bed.

Beautifully managed facility with exceptional natural values

Pros: Wow Trogon Lodge just wow!!! Our original itinerary did not include this spot, but when we rearranged to save some driving time we needed 2 nights between Ranch Naturalista and Ojochal. Trogon lodge was a gem on every level. Relatively affordable, stunning scenery, gorgeous staff from the manager down, the BEST food we have had in Costa Rica, amazing gardens and….incredible birds! Including the volcano humming bird and of course…. The quetzal. This has been my favourite experience so far in Costa Rica and I will be back!!!

Cons: Absolutely nothing

Beautiful scenery, but don't go for dinner and tours

Pros: Amazing scenery, beautiful garden, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff.

Cons: Overpriced dinner, average food and very small portions. The tours seemed a bit overpriced. We were requested to pay extra to enter a property for the quetzal watching tour. For the pricey bird watching tour, we were simply brought to another hotel's garden equipped with bird food.

Pros: Lovely setting, very comfortable beds. Nice touch bringing hot water bottles. Good food in restaurant.

Cons: Would have liked tea/coffee facilities in the room. WiFi was only available in public areas.

Very good

Pros: Beautiful lodge with absolutely stunning gardens filled with deliciously smelling flowers and odorant blossom trees and avocado trees - thus also full of colibris and even quetzals. Paradise in the cloudforest! All staff go out of their way for guests and are extremely professionnal, courteous and kind. On a rainy and chilly night we came back to hot water bottles on our beds and appreciated the attention so much. A special mention should be given to the landscaping and gardening staff thanks to whom the place is such an Eden. I hope they get regular raises! Rooms were comfy and spotlessly clean, the breakfast delicious and plentiful and the other meals we took there were also excellent. The café also has some lovely choices.

Cons: The trouts in the ponds visibly experience serious crowding stress: they display the typical circling behaviour of fish in distress. Maybe less emphasis on mass trout fishing and more ethics (like also less animal skin throws in the café and more meatless options in the restaurant) would make the place even better!
