i enjoyed it but management arrangements could be better

Pros: good price interesting old casa or hotel interesting art comfortable, clean room

Cons: was managed remotely from another hostel Stray Cat Hostel which was five minutes walk away. This was ok but had to walk there for breakfast (which i didn’t do)This wasn’t made clear until after i’d made the booking. When a woman with a child who had made a booking turned up late at night i let them in but they were not happy that i let them in etc

Fine

Pros: The rooms are spacious and comfortable! Hot water and good typical breakfast! Parking just big enough for our 4x4

Cons: Location isn’t in the best neighbourhood! But close to most bus stations

Solid option for a short say on a budget

Pros: Small budget hotel in a quiet area close to the center of San Jose. It has this traditional style that has its charme. The breakfast offer is coffee or tea with scrambled eggs and rice with beans - no other options offered. It is a solid option for a short stay on a budget. Staff is very friendly and accommodating, it definitely helps to bring some Spanish.

Cons: The area is definitely not the best, especially after dark. It is rather close to the transportation terminals and the red zone of the city center - something to keep in mind.

Pros: Stayed one night, close to the bus station. When checking in the receptionist didn’t speak English but was very nice and proactive so we easily managed everything :) Comfortable and clean room and they also offer breakfast in the morning (from 7:30)

Cons: The area isn’t the nicest

Pros: We stayed here both on.our way in and way out of San Jose. We arrived on a very late flight but this wasn't a problem. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was great. It's a short walk (10-15 mins) to the central market, shops and restaurants. We were warned not to walk around at night, but it didn't feel too bad and I expect this is the case for most of San Jose.. The hotel can order you in.pizza. The rooms are basic but clean and perfectly adequate for a short stay. The hotel has some nice decor and a garden area.

Cons: Nothing, it was lovely.

Good value for money

Pros: Friendly staff, very clean and I felt safe inside. Wifi was good and there was a tv in the room. Cute cat too

Cons: Taking luggage up the stairs is a struggle. No microwave to reheat food. Location not safe after dark. Didn’t get full change when paying in cash and was told I would get it later but I didn’t. No exchange of currency available. Shower wasn’t great:

Cozy hotel

Pros: The hotel has nearby restaurants and small markets where you can find affordable food and other items. It is easy to get to. It is not located in downtown San Jose, but I did not mind that. I felt safe at all times. The place has great staff. Breakfast was pinto and eggs, fruit, and coffee (food). The building has wooden floor and stairs, so you may hear some noise (people walking), but nothing out of control.

Cons: A bin in the room for small trash. Maybe more soap in the bathroom.

Good place by the bus station

Pros: This good hotel is located at a 10-min walking distance from the Blanco bus station (Pto.Jimenez bus), and it is a safe walk in daytime. A good place, with friendly and helpful people, quality breakfast, coffee available any time.

Quaint home-like pension about 1 mile from center

Pros: Cassandra who managed the pension from guiding us around town, to checking us in, to making sure the rooms were made up nicely, to making breakfast, was a beautiful, kind soul! People always make the place, and she did. Rooms were what you would expect from a pension and probably even more for the price paid. Beautiful courtyard garden.

Cons: Not sure if it was the safest location in San Jose (only stayed one night). I didn't feel comfortable to walk alone in the evening hours. But there is a gate with a buzzer to let guests in so inside I felt perfectly fine.

Great for a late arrival to SJO

Pros: Clean and good value for money. Perfect for the bus station to puerto viejo as just a 5 min walk. The breakfast and coffee were also really good!

Cons: Nothing. Exactly as stated.
